Beypore, Thusharagiri, Fort Bekal, Wayanad (wildlife sanctuaries, pookot
lake, lakkidi etc.) |
| Kappad
beach: This is the historic beach where Vasco da Gama landed on
the 27th of May 1498. A monument on the beach commemorates this
historic event. The rock studded beach locally known as Kappakadavu
is half hours drive from Calicut(19 kms.). It is perhaps one of the
few beaches in the state where utter solitude and serenity are an
everyday affair. |
Kadalundi
Bird Sanctuary: Located 25 km from Calicut, the estuary at
Kadalundi is a heaven for migratory birds. Terns, gulls, herons,
sandpipers, whimbrels and other exotic birds flock into this place
in November and return home in April. |
Beypore:
10km south of Calicut, located at the mouth of the Chaliyar
river, Beypore, one of the prominent ports and fishing harbours of
ancient Kerala was an important trade and maritime centre. Ancient
Beypore was much sought after by merchants from Western Asia, for
its shipbuilding industry. The boat building yard here, famous for
the construction of the Uru ( the Arabian trading vessel), boasts a
tradition of almost 1500 years. |
Thusharagiri:
Thusharagiri, 50 kms from Calicut is the site of three
magnificent waterfalls, which have their origin in the river
Chalipuzha. Ample facilities for trekking and tented accomodation
are available at this locale. Trekkers can start early morning from
second waterfall and climb uphill through the pristine, dense
evergreen forests populated with exotic birds and wildlife to reach
Vythiri by evening. |
Fort
Bekal: Fort Bekal stands towering over the sea at Bekal, 16 kms
from the Kasargode. The largest and the best preserved of all forts
in Kerala, it has had a turbulent history. In the 18th century, Tipu
Sultan captured this fort. Later it was wrested from his hands by
British.
Close to the fort is an old mosque, believed to
have been erected by Tipu Sultan. Bekal also houses a health resort.
The famous Bekal beach is one of the cleanest and most beautiful in
the state. |
Wayanad
Ghats: The green ghats enroute to Wayanad has nine hairpin
